Stockport County Trophies & Titles

Stockport County logo with yellow backgroundBased in Stockport in Greater Manchester, Stockport County are unlikely to challenge their neighbours Manchester City and Manchester United for honours any time soon, unless they get bought by a nation state in the same way that City did. Even so, the club has enjoyed its fair share of success relative to its place in the Football League pyramid.

Sure, we’re not going to be able to talk about the club winning the FA Cup, like Wigan Athletic did in 2013, but we can point to the likes of the Manchester Senior Cup and the Cheshire Medal as tournaments that they have added to the trophy cabinet at one point or another.

League Titles

Stockport County have never even played in the country’s top-flight division, let alone threatened to win it. That doesn’t mean that the league success that the club has enjoyed over the years is to be dismissed entirely, however. The Hatters might not be Premier League title contenders, but they have won a few lower divisions that are worthy of mentioning here. The invention of the Premier League made things slightly confusing for the naming of the divisions below it in the English Football League pyramid for a while, which is why Stockport County’s League Two win in 2024 was actually the fourth level of the game.

Third Division North / Second Division / League One

The following table takes a look at how the club got on in the Third Division North, which later became the Second Division, and is nowadays known as League One

Neither a six point gap nor a three point gap sounds particularly impressive in this day and age, but back then the clubs were playing for two point for a win rather than three. That means that both of Stockport County’s wins in what was known as the Football League Third Division North at the time were reasonably comfortable, all things considered. Stockport County also finished as runners-up at the end of the 1928-1929 season, the 1929-1930 campaign and in 1996-1997.

1921-1922 56 Darlington 50
1936-1937 60 Lincoln City 57

Fourth Division

The club has also enjoyed some success in the Fourth Division, which would nowadays be known as League Two as shown below. In the 1966-1967 season it was once again two points for a win, making the victory over Southport relatively comfortable in spite of only being five points on paper.

In 2023-2024, however, it was three points for a win, so the four point margin is exactly as tight as it looks. That being said, Wrexham were owned by Hollywood stars, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, at the time, so keeping them at bay was an impressive performance. Added to the wins in the fourth-tier league, Stockport County also finished second at the end of the 1990-1991 campaign and gained promotion by winning the play-offs in 2008.

1966-1967 64 Southport 59
2023-2024 92 Wrexham 88

National League

There are other divisions lower down the pecking order into the realm of non-league that Stockport County have enjoyed some success in over the years. The top level of non-league football is the National League, with the following being the Hatters’ performance in it when they won it:

Season Points Second Place Second Place Points
2021-2022 94 Wrexham 88

It was the Wrexham of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds that Stockport County once again held at bay during the 2021-2022 season, making the accomplishment noteworthy in its own right.

National League North

Below the National League is the National League North, the fifth level of the English Football League pyramid. Stockport County had to win that in order to make it up through the divisions.

It is fair to say that Stockport County’s success in the 2019-2020 season was hard-fought, pushing Chorley all the way and pipping them to the title by a single point to earn automatic promotion rather than having to make their way through the play-offs.

As you might imagine for a club as old as Stockport County, the club has also enjoyed some success in lower leagues that we don’t have heaps of information about. At the end of the 1899-1900 season, for example, they won the Lancashire League. Five years later and the club was toasting its success in the Lancashire Combination, with both of them being league titles but neither of them warranting much discussion.

Cups & Trophies

Given the fact that Stockport County was formed in 1883, it is perhaps not all that surprising that the club has enjoyed success in numerous cups and trophies over the years. Whilst none them have the prestige of something, such as the FA Cup or the League Cup, it is still worth pointing out what they won and when they managed to win it.

Here we take a look at all of the trophies that Stockport County have won at one point or another in the club’s history. Whilst none of the trophies are the sort that would trouble the trophy cabinets of the more senior clubs in Manchester, they are ones that Stockport County are proud of and have kept the club ticking over in terms of silverware over the years.
